Jan was born in Rochester, NY on August 27, 1950 the son of the late William and Ethel Knitter Major. He has resided in Phelps, NY for the past 27 years, moving there from Scottsville, NY. He had an Associate's Degree from R.I.T. in Tool and Dye and was a partner in the ownership of Roth Manufacturing Corporation, Phelps, NY. He was a member of St. Francis Church, Phelps, NY. Jan loved hunting, camping and fishing. He also was a Civil War Buff.
